# Read prompt source

> Read the editable source behind one prompt before changing it; returns the prompt with its content, source text, edit mode and the reasons it can only be edited as source.

`promptSource(projectReference: String!, id: String!, sourceTargetKind: SourceReadTargetKind, runtimeTargetKind: RuntimeTargetKind, targetBranchId: ID, targetEnvironmentId: ID): PromptSource!`

Requires project.agents.read.

## Arguments

| `runtimeTargetKind` | [`RuntimeTargetKind`](https://veryfront.com/docs/cloud/graphql/types/runtimetargetkind) | No | Used as the source to read when sourceTargetKind is omitted. |
| `targetBranchId` | [`ID`](https://veryfront.com/docs/cloud/graphql/types/id) | No | Required with the kind preview\_branch. |
| `targetEnvironmentId` | [`ID`](https://veryfront.com/docs/cloud/graphql/types/id) | No | Not supported for source reads; a non-null value is refused as invalid\_input. |

## Response

Returns [`PromptSource!`](https://veryfront.com/docs/cloud/graphql/types/promptsource). Open the type for its fields and nested types.

Types marked with `!` cannot be null. Lists use `[Type]` notation. The [type index](https://veryfront.com/docs/cloud/graphql/schema.md) lists all published input and response types.
