# Read release (GraphQL)

> Get a release.

`release(projectReference: String!, releaseReference: String!): Release!`

Requires project.releases.read.

## Arguments

| Argument | Type | Required | Description |

| `projectReference` | [`String!`](https://veryfront.com/docs/cloud/graphql/types/string) | Yes | Project UUID, slug or configured domain. |
| `releaseReference` | [`String!`](https://veryfront.com/docs/cloud/graphql/types/string) | Yes | Release ID, latest, or a version specifier: 1.2.3 for exact, 1.2 for the newest 1.2.x, 1 for the newest 1.x.x. |

## Response

Returns [`Release!`](https://veryfront.com/docs/cloud/graphql/types/release). Open the type for its fields and nested types.

| `buildStatus` | [`ReleaseStatus`](https://veryfront.com/docs/cloud/graphql/types/releasestatus) | Phase of the build step. Deprecated: Use buildOutcome. (CR-release-graphql-pre-contract-fields) |
| `deployStatus` | [`ReleaseStatus`](https://veryfront.com/docs/cloud/graphql/types/releasestatus) | Phase of the environment deployment step. A successful build never sets this on its own. Deprecated: Use deployOutcome. (CR-release-graphql-pre-contract-fields) |
