# Deploy an agent to Slack

> Let a project agent answer Slack mentions and direct messages.

Connect a Slack workspace in the [Channels](https://veryfront.com/docs/studio/panels/channels.md) panel and pick the agent that answers. Each Slack message starts a run of that agent, so replies use the agent's model, tools, and knowledge.

## Steps

1. In Studio, open the project.
2. Open [Channels](https://veryfront.com/docs/studio/panels/channels.md).
3. Select **Connect Slack**.
4. In Slack, approve the Veryfront app for your workspace.
5. In Slack, invite the Veryfront app to each channel it should answer in.
6. In **Slack channel**, pick a channel or **All invited channels**. A preview branch needs a specific channel, so pick one if the agent runs on a preview branch.
7. In **Agent**, pick the agent that answers. See [Create an agent](https://veryfront.com/docs/studio/guides/create-agent.md) if you don't have one yet.
8. In **Respond when**, choose **Only when mentioned**, **Direct messages**, or **All messages**.
9. In **Runs on**, choose **Main branch**, **Preview branch**, or **Environment**.
10. For a preview branch or an environment, pick it in the **Preview branch** or **Environment** field that appears.
11. Select **Create channel**.
12. In **Test Slack channel**, pick a channel.
13. Select **Send test message** to confirm the connection.

## How replies work

* The agent replies in the thread of the message it answers.
* Replies in the same thread continue the same conversation, so the agent sees earlier turns.
* The app adds an eyes reaction while the agent works, then a check mark when it replies, or a cross when the run fails.
* Each reply is a run. Open [Runs](https://veryfront.com/docs/studio/panels/runs.md) to inspect it, and [Conversations](https://veryfront.com/docs/studio/panels/conversations.md) to read the thread.
* Runs use project credits like any other run.

## Troubleshooting

| Symptom | Fix |
| - | - |
| The agent never answers | Ensure the app is invited to the channel and the channel is selected in **Slack channel**. |
| The channel shows **Needs attention** | Select **Reconnect Slack** in the [Channels](https://veryfront.com/docs/studio/panels/channels.md) menu. Slack revoked or expired the token. |
| Replies arrive without reactions | Reconnect Slack to grant the `reactions:write` permission. Connections made before reactions existed don't have it. |
| The agent replies with an error message | Open the run in [Runs](https://veryfront.com/docs/studio/panels/runs.md) to see why it failed, for example missing credits or a model error. |
